Historic Metamora, Indiana 1838 Canal Town

Bring your family and friends to Metamora to get the feeling of being an old-time prospector as you pan for semi-precious gems and fossils. Find more than 60 different types of gemstones such as amethyst, garnet, topaz, aquamarine, and quartz crystal just to name a few. Buckets start at $8 and up so it’s an affordable and fun experience for the whole family.

A rustic fourteen foot water tower delivers a stream of water through a flume system which cascades down into the mining area. Visitors can sit along the twenty-four foot sluice and get their hands wet while scooping dirt into the screen pans. The running water then washes away the dirt to reveal the sparkling gems and fossils. When your bucket is empty and you have gathered all the gems you wish to keep, we will gladly review and identify your stones as a complimentary service. The Metamora Gem Mine offers a learning experience for children and adults of all ages to learn about various gems, fossils and their properties.

Metamora Gem Mine is located in the back yard of the Mount Holland House which can be found on Main Street next to the park with the gazebo.

HOURS: Wednesday - Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. For special weekday mining experiences for groups of 15 or more please call.
